I should have told you

Below is a short piece I wrote with the help of a writing prompt from @trust.and.travel‘s instagram page. They posted a picture & asked a few sensory questions to get the creative juices flowing and asked writers to start with the phrase “I should have told you” and begin writing for 15 minutes straight! It was fun to just see where the writing led me…read on below the inspo photo.

I should have told you that it’s ok to be shy. I should have told you that it’s ok to listen more than you speak. I should have told you more often that I love you, and I should have told you that I really mean it.

I should have told  you that your gifts are special and unique. That being like everyone else is not what you were put here on this earth to do.

I should have told you that every time you feel the sweet flow of words streaming from your soul and onto the paper, those are the moments that you feel most alive. I should have told you that feeling alive can be brief in this life, so cling to those moments and the things and the people that make you feel them.

I should have told you to put down the mirror, and close your eyes. That’s where the beauty is. I should have told you that other people’s validation is cheap and fleeting, and that you are neither of those things.

I should have told you to dance more, to spend time alone more, to go for walks more. I should have told you that it’s ok to be a dreamer, but it’s important to get out into the world and live out those dreams.

I should have told you that I always believed you. I always trusted you, I always had faith in you. I still do, I’m just much better at showing it now.

I should have told you that your passions are what will carry you through the ups and downs of this existence. I should have told you that it hurts to exist sometimes, but the other side of the pain is joy, and boy are you good at feeling both.

I should have told you that I love you more, I should have told you that you weren’t enough less. I should have told you that it’s not naïve to trust on things that you cannot see. I should have told you that you can be too trusting of people. But you have the intuition in you to be able to tell the difference between the two.

I should have told you that everything leading up to this point right here that has you stroking this keyboard, was meant to be. I will tell you now that you are a person I am proud of. I will tell you now that nothing was for naught. I will tell you now that you are radiant and talented. You are beautiful and bright. So please don’t forget to tell yourself more often how incredible you are. How magnificent your spirit is. And how amazed you are of yourself.

I should have told you all of this when you needed it most. So for when the tide rises too far over your head again, think back to all these things I should have told you.

Beautiful piece. And what an inspiring way to begin a day – by telling yourself all of these things you should have said – I’m glad you’re saying them
